Partnering for Resilience: Social Innovation & the Blue-Green Network

We’re proud to partner with Auckland Council’s Healthy Waters department on the Blue-Green Network — a key part of the Making Space for Water programme aimed at reducing flood risk and restoring natural waterways across Tāmaki Makaurau.

The role of our Senior Advisers is to walk alongside Council, mana whenua, and community to ensure this mahi is rooted in equity, resilience, and place by:

  • Bringing together community working groups for each of the blue green projects across Tāmaki Makaurau.

  • Strong engagement with local leaders and community groups

  • Cultural expertise to work alongside mana whenua, understanding to uphold tikanga and reflect local priorities

  • Systems-level experience to bridge infrastructure with community wellbeing

We support these large-scale infrastructure projects by embedding community voice, building trust, and ensuring transparent engagement at every stage — from feasibility to delivery.

The first projects have now broken ground in Māngere, where communities were among the hardest hit during the 2023 floods. These upgrades — including bridge replacements and stream restorations — will significantly reduce flood risk for hundreds of homes near Te Ararata Stream and Harania Creek.

Together with mana whenua, Healthy Waters and other Auckland Council teams, local boards and community champions like I Am Māngere, we’re shaping a future where nature-based solutions do more than just manage water — they strengthen connections to whenua, to each other, and to a more resilient city.
