There’s more to our Māori and Pasifika Trades Training than just courses and qualifications – providing mana enhancing support matters too

We’ve learnt a lot through all our work in employment kaupapa and we understand the things that life can throw at people that can make it hard to stay on track.

Our commitment to learners and graduates is to provide manaaki to help you succeed in reaching your goals, whether that’s whilst you’re training, looking for a good job afterwards or being supported to thrive in work.

That’s why we partner with Social Labour Supply, a kaupapa Māori organisation (and member of Amotai) who provide a holistic approach to supporting all people of Aotearoa New Zealand into rewarding and sustainable employment by minimising the barriers that stand in their way.

With Social Labour Supply, the training providers and employers who are part of our network, we’re committed to ensuring everyone gets a fair go at realising their potential. This might be:

  • Referring people to organisations that can help people to have good emotional, physical and mental wellbeing, including being drug-free.

  • Helping overcome practical barriers such as not having a driver licence or getting the right gear, tools or additional qualifications.

  • Literacy or numeracy support.

  • Talking through the different career opportunities so people can go into an industry or occupation with their eyes wide open.

  • Brokering people into jobs with reputable employers.

  • Finding mentors.

  • Getting into apprenticeships (or equivalent) to accelerate career prospects.

What’s involved in joining our Māori and Pasifika Trades Training?

We understand that these industries aren’t for everyone. But if you are keen on MPTT, all we ask is that you:

  • Meet the criteria of being of Māori and/or Pasifika descent and aged 16-40 years of age.

  • Are genuinely interested in these types of careers.

  • Have the energy and ability to engage with the programme.

  • Are committed to completing.

We’re also committed to kairangatira – excellence – and mana enhancing behaviour. So we ask everyone involved in our programme to role model of these values.

Registering your interest is easy

If you’re interested, just complete our online form and we’ll get back to you. There’s no obligation to do anything else. You can also email us on mptt@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz.

Your information will remain private and confidential and used for recruitment and statistical purposes only.

Who else is involved in our Māori and Pasifika Trades Training?

We have a governance group that includes a diverse range of people with expertise and connections in the trades, technology, te ao Māori, Pasifika, training, apprenticeships, economic development, gender equity and employers. The Chair is Anna-Jane Edwards, co-founder and Manukura of Amotai, designer of the Uptempo programme and a board member of the NZ Drug Foundation.

Our exciting news is that MPTT has recently moved in to Amotai which has over 1,600 Māori and Pasifika owned businesses across the country, 39% of which are in construction and infrastructure. This move will enable us to better connect MPTT graduates with a wide range of supportive Māori and Pasifika employers and help us to grow an economy of mana.

Are you an awesome employer? We’d love to hear from you

Our programme isn’t just about training people – there’s no point if it doesn’t lead to decent work with real career prospects.

We can’t make the difference needed on our own; we need great employers with great jobs. We’re looking to partner with employers who are as passionate as us about providing meaningful, mana enhancing opportunities to our MPTT graduates. We’re also interested in employers in the trades and tech who are engaging Māori and Pasifika employees in innovative ways. If that’s you, please get in touch.
